What this name means?
Ezekiel's prophecy concludes in this exciting way. In the twenty fifth year of his exile, the prophet had a remarkable vision regarding the temple of Jehovah whose model was supplied by the Almighty himself. Ezekiel also saw a city nearby called "Jehovah Himself Is There".
The city in the vision is described as a square, each side with 4.500 feet long (2.331 meters) and twelve gates, each one with the name of each one of Israel's tribes. The name Jehovah-Shammah would indicate a representative presence of God, like the one expressed in other biblical passages, like Psalms 46:5, 132:13, 14, Isaiah 24:23, Joel 3:21 and Zechariah 2:10, 11.
The city's main objective is to praise Jehovah's name, as it is well explained by the chosen name. But what does the city of the vision represent? The Watchtower of March 1st, 1999, page 18, explains:
"It is not a heavenly city, because it lies in the middle of unholy land. So it must be something earthly. What is a city? Does it not give the idea of people united as a structured and organized group? Yes. Therefore, the city seems to represent the earthly administration, that benefits all who will constitute the just, earth society. It will function as a whole in the forecoming "new earth". The city's gates, on all sides, show that she is always open. God's people today is not under a secret, shadowy organization. Brothers with responsibility must be accessible; the principles that guide them are well known to all. The fact that people from all tribes work on the land that nourish the city reminds us that the "other sheep" support, even in a material way, all the administrative arrangements made for God's people around the world."
